Reindeer Facts

  • Reindeer are members of the deer (Cervidae) family.

  • Unlike other Cervidae members, both male and female reindeer grow antlers.

  • Rangifer tarandus tarandus is their scientific name.

  • Reindeer were first domesticated by people in northern Eurasia about 5,000 to 7,000 years ago.

  • Today reindeer live throughout the Arctic -- in Alaska, Canada, China, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia.
