During his three-year appointment with the Ocean Studies Board, Moran will help to provide guidance and advice on future priorities and directions for the nation’s oceanography community. He will also focus on increasing awareness of the blue economy — that part of our nation’s economy that relates to the marine environment and its resources — including commercial fishing, oil and gas drilling, ocean observing and related marine research activities.

Moran also was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership and the Board of Governors of the Alaska Ocean Observing System.

Trustees of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership are elected by roughly 100 member organizations to represent the nation’s ocean sciences community to state and federal agencies and policy makers. His trusteeship is also a three-year appointment, with meetings held in Washington, D.C., that bring together leaders in ocean sciences research and education, science policy, and the private sector.

As part of the Alaska Ocean Observing System board, Moran will represent the university and SFOS. The board provides policy guidance related to observing, predicting and managing Alaska’s oceans and marine resources.

“It is a great honor to serve on each of these boards and connect SFOS/UAF and Alaska to new opportunities in fisheries and ocean sciences research, policy, education and public engagement at the national level,” Moran said.
