The research potential of the Alaska Commercial Co.'s archival records will be examined in a talk Oct. 28.

Katherine Arndt, Alaska and polar regions bibliographer at UAF's Rasmuson Library, will discuss the records at 6 p.m. in the library.

In her talk, “Would-Be Heirs to a Fur Empire,” Arndt will describe how the records create a window into the development of American commerce in Alaska. The records, from 1868 to 1913, reflect the company's efforts to remain profitable in an economy that was shifting its focus from furs to fish and gold.

The Alaska Commercial Co. documents make up one of the largest business record assemblages in the Rasmuson Library's Alaska and Polar Research Collections and Archives.

The talk is co-sponsored by the UAF Northern Studies Program. The event is made possible in part by Northwest Archivists Inc.

Parking is free after 5 p.m.
