Alaska FFA members from across the state will gather in Anchorage April 21-25 for the 39th annual convention of the state FFA.

FFA members involved in agricultural and natural resource education will compete in leadership and career development events, participate in community service projects and attend workshops.

More than 100 FFA members from North Pole, Delta Junction, Fairbanks, Kenai, Kodiak, Anchorage, Wasilla and Palmer will meet at the ChangePoint Church. Students will compete in subject areas, including floriculture, agriculture technology, prepared and extemporaneous speaking, job interviews, veterinary science, and, for the first time, marine technology. The marine competition includes written tests and hands-on activities, such as identifying marine tools, mending nets, grading oysters and a man-overboard event.

The Alaska FFA Association is part of the National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America. Alaska State FFA advisor Kevin Fochs said the organization provides education in a variety of agricultural and natural resource careers. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service administers the FFA program. For more information, contact Fochs at 907-746-9499 or kfochs@alaska.edu.
