Fans will have their first chance to catch a glimpse of the 2019 Alaska Nanooks volleyball team this week, as the team is set to host their annual Blue vs. Gold intrasquad scrimmage this Friday, Aug. 23, at the Alaska Airlines Court at the Patty Center. The Blue vs. Gold scrimmage is set to begin at 7 p.m.

Nanooks swim to host dual fundraisers on Aug. 24
The Alaska Nanooks swimming program will be hosting two fundraisers this upcoming Saturday, Aug. 24, featuring the inaugural Water Safety Day and the Swimming Pool Party Palooza. Both events will take place at the Patty Center pool.

The Water Safety Day will take place from 10 a.m.-noon and is aimed to inform participants about general water safety, pool rules, ice safety, buddy safety, rescue techniques, emergency planning and responding, proper life jacket use and more. The cost is $50 per participant but drops to $40 if more than one sibling participants, while on-site registration is set for $60.

The Swimming Pool Party Palooza is set for 2-4 p.m. and will introduce kids to all four competitive swimming strokes, diving off the starting blocks, learn flip-turns and will feature a pool party at the conclusion of the event. The cost is $30 per participant.

Nanooks rifle brings back the Clay Classic
After a small hiatus, the Alaska Nanooks rifle team will be co-hosting the Nanook Clay Classic on Saturday, Aug. 24, in association with the Fairbanks Trap Club. The event will take place at the Fairbanks Trap Club, located on the corner of Hagelbarger Avenue and the Old Steese Highway in Fairbanks. Registration will start at 1 p.m. with the first shot slated for 1:30 p.m. The cost to enter the Nanook Clay Classic is $60 for an individual and $300 for a team.

The trap competition will include one round of singles and one round of midrange handicap. The event will also include games, with prizes awarded to the individual and team winners, as well as door prizes.

Nanooks hockey’s third annual Battle of the Boards Cornhole Tournament set for Saturday
In cooperation with the Face-Off Club, the Alaska Nanooks hockey team will be hosting their third annual Battle of the Boards Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 1-4 p.m. at Growden Memorial Park. The two-player per team tournament will feature a $500 prize for first place and $250 prize for second place. Players, coaches and alumni will be on hand to interact with fans and participate in the tournament.

Nanooks cross-country's Blue and Gold 5k race
The Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s cross-country running teams will kick off the 2019 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, on the UAF running trails (by the ski hut on West Ridge). The Nooks will host a 5k community race at 10 a.m. before hosting two NCAA collegiate meets against in-state rival Alaska Anchorage. The UAF vs. UAA women’s 5k race is set for 10:45 a.m., while the Nanooks vs. the Seawolves men’s 7k race is slated for 11:15 a.m. Following the conclusion of the men’s 7k race, there will be a children’s 1k race.

The cost to participate in the community race is $10 per person or $30 for a family, with all the proceeds going to benefit the Alaska Nanooks cross-country running teams.

The event will also feature food, live music, free refreshments and appearances by each of Alaska’s 10 varsity athletic teams.
