LAST WEEK: at UAA Invite | THIS WEEK: at RMISA/West Region Championships (Feb. 20 and 22)
The Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will continue conference action in Anchorage this week, as they are set to compete in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Conference and West Region Championships this Wednesday, Feb. 20, and Friday, Feb. 22. Both Wednesday and Friday’s action will take place at the Governor’s Peak Recreation Area in Palmer, Alaska, with the 10/5km freestyle race scheduled for Wednesday and the 20/15km classic race set for Friday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | 4-18, 1-15 GNAC
LAST WEEK: 1-1 | THIS WEEK: at Saint Martin’s (Feb. 21), at Seattle Pacific (Feb. 23)
The Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball team earned their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory since the 2016-2017 season last week, defeating Western Oregon 68-65 at the Alaska Airlines Court. Alaska dropped Saturday’s contest to a hot Concordia team on Saturday, 71-44. The Nooks will hit the road for a pair of GNAC contests this week, taking on the Saint Martin’s Saints in Lacey, Washington, on Thursday, Feb. 21, before taking on the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Saturday, Feb. 23, in Seattle. Tip-off on Thursday is set for 6 p.m. Alaska time at the Marcus Pavilion, while Saturday’s tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. Alaska time at the Brougham Pavilion.

MEN’S BASKETBALL | 5-18, 2-14 GNAC
LAST WEEK: 0-2 | THIS WEEK: vs. Simon Fraser (Feb. 21), vs. Western Washington (Feb. 23)
The Alaska Nanooks dropped both conference games on the road last week, falling 84-65 at Central Washington on Thursday before dropping Saturday’s game 104-75 at Northwest Nazarene. The Nanooks return home to the Alaska Airlines Court this weekend, hosting the Simon Fraser Clan on Thursday, Feb. 21 before taking on the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tip-off on Thursday is set for 7 p.m. Alaska time, while Saturday is slated for 2 p.m. Alaska time.

HOCKEY | 9-18-3, 9-13-2-2 WCHA
LAST WEEK: 0-1-1-1 | THIS WEEK: vs. #4 Minnesota State Mankato (Feb. 22-23)
The Alaska Nanooks were on the road last week, falling 8-0 to the then-No. 16th-ranked Bowling Green Falcons on Friday before earning a 3-3 tie on Saturday, earning the extra conference point with a goal in double-overtime. The Nanooks return to the Carlson Center for their final home series of the 2018-2019 season this week, hosting the No. 4 Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series this Friday, Feb. 22, and Saturday, Feb. 23. Puck-drop both nights is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.

Quick recaps:

  • Rifle: The Alaska Nanooks rifle team placed second in an NCAA qualifying match, posting a team aggregate score of 4660. Senior JT Schnering posted the highest individual aggregate total of the day with an 1178, collecting a 593 in air rifle and a 585 in smallbore.

  • Ski: The Nooks competed in day one of the 2019 UAA Invitational at Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Sunday, racing in the 10km freestyle. Senior Kati Roivas was the highest-finishing Alaska skier on the day with a fourth place overall finish (31:55.4), while redshirt-senior Seiji Takagi led the men’s team with a 13th place finish (28:12.1).

  • Swimming: Alaska closed-out the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships in La Mirada, California on Saturday, ranking seventh in the women’s team rankings with 669 points. The Nooks earned two individual podium finishes and a conference title in the 200-yard medley relay.


Two from men's basketball named to GNAC all-academic team
Last week, redshirt-sophomore Zach Hatch and junior Jalon McCullough were named to the GNAC’s 2018-19 men’s basketball all-academic team. It was both Hatch and McCullough’s first conference honor of their careers.
