After suffering a sweep at home to then-No. 11th-ranked Western Washington and Simon Fraser last week, the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team will hit the road and look to bounce back this week, taking on the Western Oregon Wolves on Thursday, Oct. 12, in Monmouth before facing the Concordia Cavaliers on Saturday, Oct. 14, in Portland. Both Thursday's and Saturday’s games are scheduled to being at 6 p.m. AKDT.

The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team officially opens the 2017-2018 season this Friday, Oct. 13, by hosting the Ohio State University Buckeyes and the United States Air Force Academy Falcons in a three-team match at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen’s Association in Fairbanks. The fun doesn’t stop there, as the Nanooks face Ohio State once more on Saturday, Oct. 14, before facing the Falcons once more on Sunday, Oct. 15. Both Saturday's and Sunday’s matches will take place at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range in the Patty Center.

LAST WEEK: 0-1-1 | THIS WEEK: at #6 St. Cloud State University (Oct. 13-14)
Under first-year head coach Lance West, the Alaska Nanooks officially opened the 2017-2018 season last weekend, hosting the then-No. 17th-ranked Air Force Falcons. Alaska lost 3-2 to Air Force on Friday before officially tying 1-1 on Saturday but scoring in double overtime to end the game. The Nanooks hit the road for the first time this season, taking on the No. 6, 4th-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies in St. Cloud on Friday, Oct. 13. and Saturday, Oct. 14. Friday’s nonconference match-up is slated for 4:37 p.m. AKDT while Saturday’s game is scheduled for 4:07 p.m. AKDT.
Ravn Alaska Nanooks of the Week (Oct. 9-15)
On Monday, the Alaska Nanooks sports information office declared senior setter Rachel Nichols (volleyball) and redshirt-senior Carl Wahlin the Oct. 9 selections for the Ravn Alaska Nanooks of the Week for their performances on the court and on the trails, respectively.
Rachel Nichols (Sr. | Riverton, Utah)
Despite being swept in two Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches at home last week, the 2017 Alaska volleyball captain continues to be the consistent spark the Nanooks need. Nichols tallied 34 assists and 17 digs in two matches last week, including her fifth double-double on the year (20 assists, 10 digs) against the then-No. 11th-ranked Western Washington Vikings.
Carl Wahlin (R-Sr. | Bismarck, North Dakota)
Wahlin was Alaska men’s cross-country running’s highest-finishing student-athlete in the Western Washington Cross Country Classic in Bellingham, Washington, on Saturday afternoon, completing the 10km race with a time of 3#:49.8 to place 59th overall. Wahlin’s finish marks the first time this season he has been the highest-ranking Nanook male.
@AlaskaNanooksXC team day at Beaver Sports and Trax Outdoor Center
Mark your calendars! Beaver Sports and Trax Outdoor Center are collaborating with the Alaska Nanooks to host a fundraiser for the men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams on Friday, Oct. 13. At Beaver Sports, 15 percent of all sales from the entire day will benefit the Alaska Nanooks Nordic ski teams, and if you make a donation to the program, you will receive a 20 percent discount on all clothing. Members of the Alaska Nanooks ski team and coaching staff will be on hand to teach a waxing clinic at 6 p.m.
Over at Trax Outdoor Center, root beer floats, storewide sales, prizes and pizza will be available from 5-7 p.m. Those who want to get outfitted for the winter can do so with the help of Alaska student-athletes and members of the coaching staff. Fifteen percent of all store sales go to the UAF ski team.
Kinworthy and Heaton honored by PCSC
Last Friday, the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference gave a “Special Recognition Female Athletes of the Week” to Alaska swimming juniors Sierra Kinworthy and Cassidy Heaton for their performances at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America’s National Collegiate 5km Open Water Championships in Lawrence, Kansas, Sept. 16. The open featured 53 swimmers in the women’s race. Both Kinworthy (1:08:44.29) and Heaton (1:08:45.85) posted better times than the 2016 event.

All men’s ice hockey games (home and away) can be heard live on ESPN 820am Fairbanks or at 820sports.com. Additionally, fans have the option to watch home games or away conference contests for a small fee at WCHA.tv.
