LAST WEEK: 0-2 | THIS WEEK: WCHA Quarterfinals at Mankato (Mar. 2-4)
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team suffered a sweep at home to in-state rival Alaska Anchorage last weekend to close out the 2017-18 regular season. Despite going 0-2 at the Carlson, the Nanooks collected 30 points throughout the regular season to place eighth in the WCHA standings, taking the last qualification seat to advance to the WCHA Playoffs. The Nanooks will head to Mankato, Minnesota, for a best-of-three quarterfinal series against the Minnesota State University Mavericks this Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3, with the deciding game set for Sunday, March 4, if needed. All three games will take place at the Verizon Center at 3:07 p.m. AKST.
RIFLE
LAST WEEK: Idle | THIS WEEK: Idle
The Alaska Nanooks rifle team will travel to Charleston, South Carolina, next week in search for the program’s 11th national title. Last week, the NCAA announced that the Nanooks are one of eight teams that qualified for the 2018 NCAA Rifle National Championships hosted by the Citadel on Friday, March 9, and Saturday, March 10.
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S NORDIC SKI
LAST WEEK: at RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regionals | THIS WEEK: Idle
The Alaska Nanooks men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams competed in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Conference Championships and NCAA West Regionals last week at Howelson Hill in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The Nanooks will continue to stay in Steamboat Springs and adjust to the altitude before they compete in the 2018 NCAA Skiing National Championships Thursday, March 8, and Saturday, March 10, at the same location. It is the second-straight year both the men and women’s team have qualified full teams.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL | 4-22 Overall, 0-20 GNAC
The Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball team was edged by the Central Washington Wildcats 84-74 last Thursday before falling 89-66 to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on the road last week. The Nanooks earned all four of the wins this season in nonconference action, including Hawaii Hilo (Nov. 11), Holy Names (Nov. 18) and Multnomah (Dec. 16-17). The Nanooks conclude the season ranking 11th in the conference standings under first-year head coach Brett Sawyer.
MEN’S BASKETBALL | 11-15 Overall, 9-11 GNAC
The Alaska Nanooks men’s basketball team fell in heartbreaking fashion to in-state rival Alaska Anchorage 44-43 last Tuesday before defeating the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets 69-59 on Thursday in Billings. The Nanooks just barely missed a trip to the GNAC Championships this weekend, as they tied for seventh place with Northwest Nazarene with a 9-11 record in conference play.
SWIMMING
The Alaska Nanooks swim team competed at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships two weeks ago but did not qualify any individuals or a relay team to the 2018 NCAA Swimming National Championships, despite many “B” qualifications.
Alaska Nanooks Day at Lavelle’s Taphouse
Mark your calendars! The Alaska Nanooks and Lavelle’s Taphouse partnered up for a fundraiser on Saturday, April 21. One dollar per every beer sold will go directly toward the Alaska Nanooks general scholarship fund and there will be giveaways every hour. More details to come.

In January, the Alaska Nanooks announced that Nanook hockey's junior defenseman Jack Weiss will miss the remainder of the 2017-2018 season to undergo chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. The Alaska Nanooks will keep supporters informed with updates and information on how you can support Weiss throughout the upcoming months. Use the hashtag #StickIt2Cancer to support Jack and his fight.

All Alaska Nanook hockey games (home and away) can be heard live through ESPN 820AM Fairbanks or online at 820sports.com. Additionally, fans have the option to watch the games live for a small fee on WCHA.tv.
