April is Month of the Military Child, and Alaskans are asked to “purple up” on April 21 to honor military youth.

Candi Dierenfield, the Alaska 4-H Military Partnerships program director, said wearing purple is a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military.

Alaska 4-H and the Alaska Forget-Me-Not Coalition of Service Members, Veterans and Families will host Alaska’s fifth annual Purple Up! For Military Kids. Military support activities are planned at several Alaska schools this week. Events will include military T-shirt day, camouflage day, and military child and parent lunches.

“We hope everyone will take this opportunity to appreciate and celebrate these young heroes,” Dierenfield said.
