AlaskaOne’s annual television spring fundraiser kicks off Saturday, March 5 with a poster-signing with artist Sue Steinacher of Nome.

This year’s poster features Steinacher’s painting, “Akpiks & Imuruk.” The poster is a thank-you gift for donors to AlaskaOne. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Well Street Art Company at 1304 Well Street in Fairbanks.

The 40-by-29-inch oil painting was done for the 2010 Percent for Art program, and hangs in the Nome Youth Facility. The inspiration, Steinacher says, “was a scene on the road from Nome to Teller which crossaes high rolling hills that, in summer, are often thick with ‘akpiks’ – the Inupiaq word for salmonberries or cloudberries. From one spot in particular, the extraordinary Imuruk Basin, tucked-up beneath the north face of the Kigluaik Mountains, is just visible.”

This piece was chosen by a panel of community artists and experts from more than 110 pieces submitted by 44 Alaskan artists. This year’s selection committee members were: Dixon Jones, Mareca Guthrie, Da-ka-xeen Mehner, David Mollett, Sue Sprinkle, Carol Wilbur, Jinx Whitaker and Douglas Yates.

The AlaskaOne public television network includes KUAC Fairbanks, KYUK Bethel and KTOO Juneau. Its annual spring fundraiser runs March 5-20, 2011.
