UAF will share its Arctic expertise during two public activities as part of Alaska National Lab Day. Both events will be held Tuesday, May 29.

A self-guided walking tour through 11 UAF research facilities is scheduled from 3-5 p.m. Climate science, geosciences, natural resources and engineering researchers will talk about their projects and show visitors around their labs. Dozens of researchers are participating, including Helena Buurman of the Alaska Earthquake Center; John Eichelburger, who will be on hand to discuss magma; and Hajo Eicken, who uses his sea ice expertise to help the U.S. Navy safely conduct under ice submarine exercises in the Arctic Ocean. The walking tour is free and includes stops for refreshments along the way. Visit http://bit.ly/aknatlabdayopenhouse for more information and to download a tour map.

Bill Schnabel and Nettie LaBelle-Hamer will moderate six presenter-storytellers at a TED-style talk at 6 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. University of Alaska Board of Regents Chair Gloria O'Neill will talk about how a tribal nonprofit is combing traditional knowledge with digital technology. Chris Rose, of the Renewable Energy Alaska Project, will present a new perspective on how to address climate change. Cordova Mayor Clay Koplin, who is also the CEO of the Cordova Electric Cooperative, will give a presentation on common and alternative forms of energy. Meera Kohler, with the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, will discuss potential global applications of energy use in rural Alaska. Ethan Schutt of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium will address potential heating solutions in Alaska, while Gwen Holdmann will explain how Alaska is at the forefront of research on alternative energy systems.

The talks are open to people 21 and older, and admission is $50. Visit http://bit.ly/aknatlabdaytalks to purchase tickets.
