'Assimilation' flips boarding school script
November 10, 2015
"Assimilation," a play to be staged Nov. 20-22 by Theatre UAF, flips the script on
the boarding school history that plagued indigenous people around the world.
In Alaska playwright Jack Dalton's imagined future, the Natives run the boarding school
and the whites are assimilated. Following the performances, talking and healing circles
will be held to discuss the actual history, allowing survivors a safe place to share
their experiences and those unknowing of this history to offer support and reconciliation.
Play times and dates are 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 21 and 2 p.m. Nov. 22. All performances
will be in the University of Alaska Fairbanks' Salisbury Theatre, on the east side
of the Regents' Great Hall.
Advance tickets are $16 for adults, $8 for students and $12 for military personnel
and seniors 65 and older. Tickets are $2 more at the door.
