Katherine Donahue, an author and anthropology professor at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, will talk about the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service's ship, the Bear, at 6 p.m., Oct. 15, in the Murie Building auditorium at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Donahue will discuss her new book "Steaming to the North: The First Summer Cruise of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Bear, Alaska and Siberia, 1886," published by the University of Alaska Press.

This is the first book to exhibit stunning historical photos taken by 3rd Lt. Charles Kennedy of New Bedford, Massachusetts, when he was an officer on the Bear on the first of what became an annual summer cruise into the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The photographs include images of Natives of Alaska and Siberia, their dwellings, kayaks and umiaqs, and sail- and steam-powered whaling ships.

This is a free public event.
