Automotive tech course leads to job placement for grads

An automotive technology training course created to meet the needs of local businesses has resulted in six new technicians in the local area and a 100 percent job placement rate for graduates.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College developed the training as part of an Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development State Training and Employment Program grant. STEP provides training for eligible residents to obtain job-training activities to gain marketable skills that lead to full employment.
Instructor Brian Rencher worked one-on-one with each student to find employers, fill out employment applications and prepare for interviews. In two cases, Rencher provided additional specific training those employers required. By mid-June, all six students who had finished the training had jobs.
"This grant is in line with CTC's mission to be responsive to our community. I really enjoyed teaching this group of students and seeing the excitement in them learning these skills and gaining employment, as well as working with the Department of Labor and local business that supported the training efforts and employed the students." said Rencher.
