An award-winning graduate student in photography, Ryota “Kaji” Kajita, will hold his master of fine arts thesis exhibition at the University Art Gallery in the University of Alaska Fairbanks Art Department starting March 3.

Kajita will exhibit photographs from his “Ice Formations” series, which has received international recognition, as an experimental art installation.

The exhibition will open March 3 and remain through March 14. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. A public presentation will be held March 7 from 4-5 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium, followed by a reception at the gallery from 6-7:30 p.m.

The “Ice Formations” series contains photographs of ice in rivers and lakes around Fairbanks. The photographs were taken during the past four years with a medium-format film camera, which allows Kajita to capture delicate details of the ice. For this exhibition, Kajita has created more than 40 floor-mounted light boxes to present the images. He hopes the installation will convey the joy he felt as he discovered the ice patterns.

The series has received several national and international awards. Kajita's works have been featured in magazines and other venues around the nation.

Kajita was born in Mizunami, Japan.
