Building awareness about suicide
April 20, 2021
— from the counselors at the UAF Student Health and Counseling Center
Frequently, we expect April to bring a renewed energy and sense of revitalization.
For many of us, the experience is different than what is expected. Instead, we might
experience worsening hopelessness, perceived burdensomeness and a sense of not belonging.
These factors are important for each of us to know, as they are critical indicators
of someone who is at risk for dying by suicide.
If you or someone you know is at risk, please reach out for help. You do not have
to know what to do by yourself. Others can help you figure out a way forward for yourself
or someone else. The professional counselors at the UAF Student Health and Counseling Center, or SHCC, are available Monday through Friday from 1-2 p.m. if you need to speak
with a trained counselor for yourself or someone you know.
Please call the SHCC at 474-7043 or fill out an online appointment request form to arrange for a consultation or counseling appointment. Consultations are available
for students, staff and faculty. Counseling sessions are reserved for students.
Student counseling services are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. After-hours counseling support
is available by calling 474-7043 and pressing option 1.
The Careline is another important resource with trained staff members who can help. You can reach them 24/7 at 1-877-266-4357 (HELP) or text for help at 839863, Tuesday through Saturday 3-11 p.m.
