Practical energy workshops set for April 9 in Fairbanks
April 5, 2018
Extension energy specialist Art Nash will lead workshops Monday, April 9, in Fairbanks
on options for camp energy and heating greenhouses.
Both workshops are free and will meet in the Westmark Hotel’s Tanana Trade Center.
Remote Camp Energy will be offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Greenhouse Heat from 6:30
to 8 p.m.
The camp energy workshop will cover different energy options and methods of managing
the fuel supply. Nash will talk about solar cells, small wind turbines, micro hydro,
battery banks, rocket stoves and local inventions. The greenhouse workshop will address
inexpensive methods to heat greenhouses and extend the growing season. Options will
include passive solar boxes, heat sinking and thermal mass storage. Nash will also
talk about creating and using biochar, a product of anaerobic combustion of biomass
that can improve nutrient regulation in agricultural soils.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host both workshops.
