Campus Community Garden 2012
September 13, 2012
University Relations
A group of UAF students, staff and faculty worked together to create a space for growing
nutritious foods and a healthy community on the UAF campus. After just one season,
UAF's Campus Community Garden has been met with great success and support. With the
help of the UAF People's Endowment and the Office of Sustainability and RISE Board,
grants were acquired to build or gather the infrastructure and tools necessary to
implement a community garden on campus during the summer of 2012. By June, garden
plots were available to UAF students, staff, and faculty. The efforts resulted in
42 raised beds planted with fruits, vegetables and flowers providing organic foods
for the gardeners and their families. In the coming weeks, the garden will be closed
for the season, but gardeners are planning for next spring and summer. Organizers
will monitor interest for gardening plots for next summer and are planning to open
registration for the available garden plots in March 2013. If there is sufficient
interest, they may propose to expand the campus community garden next spring.
