Campus roofing projects continue in rain

Even with a few rainy days, construction in the core area of the Fairbanks campus is in full swing. A number of projects are in the Gruening Building, including a roof replacement.

The Gruening roof replacement project is at the hot tar stage and will continue for another two weeks. Crews also are beginning to install the roof on the new engineering building, work that will take about six weeks.

Staff, faculty and students have begun to smell the hot tar. Facilities Services is doing what it can to reduce the smelly air from entering the buildings in the campus core while still providing adequate airflow for comfort during the day. Facilities crews are also doing what they can to increase air exchanges in the evening hours when the contractor is not working; this should help clear out tar smells.

UAF administration asks supervisors to be flexible if the smell bothers employees. Alternate work locations may be an option for folks who are unable to continue with their duties during the hot tar stages of roofing.
