Candidate presentations for vice chancellor for student affairs

Three candidate presentations and Q&A sessions for the position of vice chancellor
for student affairs will be held Thursday, Aug. 3; Monday, Aug. 7; and Friday, Aug.
11. All will be from 1-1:50 p.m. in the Murie Building auditorium, and will be webstreamed
at https://media.uaf.edu/.
The Aug. 3 presentation will be by Michael Harwood, who serves as the assistant vice president and assistant dean of student life at North Dakota State University. He oversees four departments in student affairs, bookstore, dining services and residence life, encompassing $50 million in resources. Harwood provides leadership and direction for over 250 full-time staff and over 500 student employees. He came to NDSU in 1998 where he served as the director of Residence Life for eight years. Prior to NDSU, he was at the University of North Dakota for six years. He completed his undergraduate degree at Montana State and went on to Mankato State for his graduate degree. He is originally from Whitefish, Montana, and now resides in Fargo with his two boys, Alex and Cole.

Patricia A. Haney will give her presentation Monday, Aug. 7. Haney has had an extensive career in higher education, having served as chief student affairs officer and other positions at a variety of institutions throughout the United States. She was vice president for student development at Notre Dame of Maryland University; vice president for student affairs at Minnesota State University, Mankato; director of universitywide student programs at the University of Illinois; vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of Illinois Springfield; and dean of students at Santa Clara University. She received her Ph.D. in education from Stanford University in the administration and policy analysis program with a concentration in higher education and a minor in sociology. Haney also received a master's degree in counseling and human systems from Florida State and a bachelor's degree, honors, in English, summa cum laude, from Gonzaga University. She attended the Institute for Educational Management Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. She is married to Paul Haney, a mechanical engineer, who is an author and publisher in race car engineering and has taught in automotive engineering technology.

Keith Champagne will give his presentation Friday, Aug. 11. Champagne currently serves as the assistant director of athletics and chief diversity officer at Central Washington University. He previously served as the associate dean for student success/associate vice president for student success at CWU. He has spent the past 26 years working in student affairs, university athletics, and academic and student life. His leadership includes oversight of student involvement, campus life, student union building, university housing and residence life, student medical and counseling clinic, and university recreation. He holds a bachelor's degree in communication, public relations from Loyola University, a master's degree in communication and media management from Clarion University, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Washington.
