Woodward to discuss university's role in Alaska art
October 6, 2017
Kesler Woodward, University of Alaska Fairbanks professor emeritus of art, will present "A Beacon for Culture: A Century of University of Alaska Leadership in the Arts” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Murie Building auditorium.
Woodward’s lecture will illustrate and discuss the indispensable role the university has played and continues to play in the development of Alaska’s visual and performing arts and Alaska’s cultural identity. The lecture is part of UAF’s 2017 centennial celebration.
Woodward’s solo exhibits have appeared in the Morris Museum of Art, University of Alaska of the North Museum, Alaska State Museum, Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, and public and commercial galleries throughout the United States.
Also an art historian and curator, Woodward has published six books on Alaska art, including “Painting in the North,” a comprehensive survey published by the Anchorage Museum and University of Washington Press in 1993.
The Department of Art is part of the College of Liberal Arts, which is the largest of UAF’s academic units and includes arts, humanities, social sciences and language disciplines.
