CFOS Juneau Seminar: Fishermen and fisheries management

October 6, 2020

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Department of Fisheries in Juneau will hold its weekly seminar Friday, Oct. 9, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Robert Murphy from the Fisheries, Aquatic Science and Technology Laboratory at Alaska Pacific University.

Working with Fishermen to Inform Fisheries Management

Murphy’s research aims to develop methodologies for systematically incorporating the study of human behavior, perceptions, and knowledge into management processes to better understand the connection between people and fish resources. In this presentation, he will discuss research conducted in Alaska and across the United States where he worked with large-scale commercial fisheries, economically critical recreational fisheries, and Alaska Native tribes to help predict how regulatory changes could fundamentally change fishing efforts and how to better incorporate stakeholder perceptions into management systems.
