CFOS Juneau Seminar: Machine learning to predict algal blooms

October 13, 2020

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences Department of Fisheries in Juneau will hold its weekly seminar Friday, Oct. 16, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by John Harley, a postdoctoral researcher at the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center at the University of Alaska Southeast.

"Machine Learning to Predict Harmful Algal Blooms in Southeast Alaska"

Paralytic shellfish poison toxins are a threat to human health and subsistence lifestyles in Southeast Alaska. It is important to understand the drivers of harmful algal blooms to inform shellfish management and aquaculture, as well as to predict trends of HABs in a changing climate. By incorporating publicly available environmental datasets we have created a machine learning model capable of forecasting PSP events in Southeast Alaska on daily time-scales. These models can be used to identify important drivers of HABs which can inform planning and modeling of food security in coming years.
