CFOS Seminar: Climate science, food-web ecology and fisheries management

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its first weekly seminar of spring semester on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Erik Schoen, a research scientist at UAF’s Institute of Arctic Biology. 

Risk and reward in a changing world: Forging stronger links between climate science, food-web ecology and fisheries management

Survival in fisheries has long hinged on navigating a careful balance between risk and reward — for fish and fishers alike. Rapid changes in climate, land cover, and food webs are disrupting these tradeoffs, posing novel challenges for conservation and management.

Schoen will discuss how fisheries scientists can better understand and respond to these changes by forging stronger links between climate science, food-web ecology, and fisheries management. He will highlight examples from his research on the effects of invasive species in lake food webs in Washington; climatic and landscape influences on salmon in Southcentral Alaska; and linkages between climate, food webs, and the resilience of Yukon River fisheries. He will also outline his vision for a student-driven, collaborative, and inclusive research program pursuing these issues at the Alaska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.
