CFOS Seminar: 'Implementing Genetics into Fisheries Management'

March 26, 2021

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its weekly seminar on Wednesday, March 31, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Ingrid Spies, a research fisheries biologist at NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Center.

"Implementing Genetics into Fisheries Management; Case Studies in Alaska Fisheries"

Fisheries science and management in Alaska is just beginning to take advantage of the potential of next-generation sequencing for advancing our knowledge of stock structure and local adaptation in commercial fisheries. In addition to adjusting management units, fisheries managers can use genetics to answer questions that are difficult to answer through other methods. For instance, genetics recently helped explain an extreme northward shift of Pacific cod in the Bering Sea. Ingrid Spies will discuss how simulation studies support the use of genetics in catch allocation, as well as several examples where genetics has (and has not) supported the implementation of new management units.
