CFOS Seminar: Monitoring demersal communities in the northeast Pacific

September 30, 2020

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences in Juneau will hold its weekly seminar Friday, Oct. 2, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Lewis Barnett, a research fishery biologist at the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center.

"Spatial Indicators for Monitoring Demersal Communities in the Northeast Pacific"

The spatial structure and dynamics of fish abundance and fishery removals likely influences management outcomes, yet we are only beginning to understand how to use this information to inform policy. Barnett will present examples of how spatial and spatiotemporal models can be used to develop to estimate trends in groundfish abundance and catch distributions. He will focus primarily on applications of these methods to demersal communities along the U.S. West Coast, while touching on ongoing and future research addressing whether and how the distribution of groundfish abundance throughout the eastern North Pacific is shaped by environmental conditions.
