February 16, 2021

Marina Washburn

Washburn is a CFOS doctoral student. The three marine species she will discuss — a clam, chiton and salmon — are critical to Alaska’s recreational, commercial and subsistence fisheries.

Global climate change, facilitated by increased greenhouse gas production, has resulted in physical and chemical alterations to the marine environment. These alterations include a decrease in oceanic pH, referred to as ocean acidification, and an increase in global marine temperature. In her talk, Washburn will discuss the effects of oceanic climate change on Pacific razor clams, bidarki (a type of chiton) and pink salmon. Each species’ population has declined in recent years. Washburn’s research seeks to answer questions about how these organisms will fare in the face of ocean acidification and warming.
