CFOS Seminar: Phytoplankton and primary production

January 22, 2021

Alice Bailey

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences will hold its second weekly seminar of spring semester on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. via Zoom. The talk will be offered by Michael W. Lomas, a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory of Ocean Sciences.

Phytoplankton and primary production in a changing (sub) Arctic

The Arctic seas are warming faster than nearly all other ocean regions, with impacts occurring at many different trophic levels. This talk examines phytoplankton and primary production observational data collected in the Bering and Chukchi seas over the past decade in the context of potential impacts on the flow of energy to copepods and ultimately higher trophic levels. These data highlight the importance of small phytoplankton, potential changes to food quality associated with different taxa, and uncoupling of energy flow and primary production.
