Cindy Van Dover part of Irving-Scholander Memorial Lecture Series

Cindy Van Dover will give two presentations Jan. 23 and 25. Her talk "From exploration to exploitation: scientific opportunities and imperatives in the deep ocean" will be Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 6-7 p.m. in the Murie Building auditorium. A reception will follow. The talk is part of the 2019 Irving-Scholander Memorial Lecture Series.

A second seminar, "Spatial planning in the deep sea in the Area Beyond National Jurisdiction: Seabed mining, seabed protection," will be on Friday, Jan. 24, from 4-5 p.m. in the Murie Building auditorium. It is part of the IAB Life Science Seminar  Series.

Van Dover is the Harvey W. Smith Distinguished Professor of Biological Oceanography at Duke University and a former pilot of the deep-sea research submarine ALVIN. Her research has focused on the study of chemosynthetic ecosystems and is now primarily devoted to emerging conservation themes related to proposed deep-sea mining and environmental management.
