U.S. Army Col. Thomas E. Hiebert will present a lecture titled “Strategic Leadership: Moving at the Speed of Trust” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Schaible Auditorium at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Hiebert is the director of strategic plans and policy at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. He will describe the connections between leadership and great strategic leaders, highlight the essential skills that all great strategic leaders have in common, and discuss how West Point is developing future strategic leaders for our nation.
Hiebert previously served as the director of the dean’s staff at West Point, the director of the management program in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership, and the officer in charge of West Point’s nationally recognized men’s rugby team. He has served in a variety of leadership assignments througout the world during a 27-year career in the Army, leading soldiers at every level from the platoon to the battalion task force.
The UAF Northern Leadership Center is sponsoring Hiebert’s visit as part of the Susan Herman Distinguished Speaker Series; this event is also co-sponsored by the UAF Homeland Security and Emergency Management program.
The Susan Herman Distinguished Speaker Series was established in the UAF Northern Leadership Center in honor of Herman, a professor who passed away in 2009. Herman was the founder of the NLC and designer of the UAF Summer Leadership Institute (now ATLAS-Alaska Teen Leadership Summit). She also designed Leadership Fairbanks for the Chamber of Commerce, among many other programs.
