Alexandre "Alex" Padilla, an economics professor from Colorado, will speak about immigration during two presentations on Friday, April 27, in the UAF Schaible auditorium. He will give presentations at 10:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. and take questions after each.

Padilla’s talk is titled “Should We Worry About Immigration?” It is sponsored by the UAF student organization Students Who Enjoy Economic Thinking, or SWEET.

In his talk, Padilla will address some of the most pressing questions that have been raised about immigration: Do immigrants displace American workers? Do immigrants increase crime rate? Do immigrants represent a fiscal burden on American taxpayers? Do immigrants undermine the fundamental institutions that made America great?

Padilla is an associate professor of economics and the director of the Exploring Economic Freedom Project at the Metropolitan State University of Denver. The Exploring Economic Freedom Project is dedicated to educating students and the general public about the role of economic and political freedom in promoting entrepreneurship, economic growth, prosperity and peace.

Padilla has published several academic articles on insider trading in the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, Commentaries on Law & Economics, the Florida State Business Review, and the Journal of Law, Economics and Policy, as well as nonacademic essays. His current research looks at the effects of immigration on institutions. His most recent article published in Public Choice examines the impact of immigration in the United States on the economic institutions that contributed to U.S. economic growth and prosperity.
