Communicating science through music lecture

University Relations

Since 2006, José Francisco Salgado has been collaborating with orchestras, composers, and electronic and chamber musicians to present science films that provoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about Earth and the universe, most notably the aurora borealis.

These science and symphony films combine astronomical images, science visualizations, historical documents and original photography to communicate science in nontraditional venues like concert halls and art museums. The films have reached 400,000 people in 350 concerts, lectures and school visits in 100 cities around the world.

Salgado will give a talk on Friday, Jan. 19, from 11 a.m.-noon about how he uses digital photography to communicate the physical processes behind the auroras and inspire audiences to learn more about science and art. The event will be held in the Elvey Auditorium in the Elvey Building.
