Community of Writing prompts Alaskans to share food stories

Writers of all ages and experience levels will find advice and resources at the Community
of Writing event hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of English
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the Noel Wien Library .
CoW’s open house-style writing activities will feature numerous interactive sessions
on writing, from forming an idea to sharing a work with an audience. Writers of all
ages and experience levels are welcome. Activities range from group discussions to
personal storytelling to puns and word games.
“Writing is a tool we all use, but it is not just a function of life, it is enjoyable
and fun,” said CoW director Sarah Stanley. “This year we are so excited to bring together
two essential ingredients for community building — food and story.”
This year’s event introduces many new activities. The English Department has designed
a garden landscape made of felt to prompt collective storytelling. Graduate students
and representatives from the Permafrost literary journal will build “poetic recipes”
with attendees, alongside a Letters About Food project hosted by the Fairbanks Correctional
Center's Women Writers Workshop and much more.
Writers are encouraged to bring a laptop computer or pen and paper to participate
in writing activities. This event is family friendly, free and open to the public.
The interdisciplinary activities are led by the Department of English, which will
have about a dozen faculty and graduate and undergraduate students on hand to lead
exercises and participate in the events.
Sponsors and partners include UAF’s College of Liberal Arts, Department of English,
Permafrost, Rasmuson Library and College of Natural Science and Mathematics’ Girls
on Ice program, as well as the FCC Women Writers Workshop, Volunteers in Service to
America participants and the National Novel Writing Month project.
The College of Liberal Arts, the largest of UAF’s academic units, comprises arts,
humanities, social sciences and language disciplines across 20 departments.
