The College of Rural and Community Development was awarded a $1 million collaborative grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Alaska Native-Serving and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions Education Competitive Grants Program to promote educational equity that strengthens and sustains Alaska Native and Rural Alaskan communities.

"Strengthening Alaska Native Stewardship" projects include:

  • ethnobotany (Kuskokwim Campus)

  • high latitude range management (Northwest Campus)

  • food security and sovereignty (Chukchi Campus)

  • environmental science and sustainable energy (Bristol Bay Campus)

  • tribal stewardship (Interior Alaska Campus)

Together, CRCD campuses will collaborate to enhance capacity for local food and energy security; increase access to innovative place-based programs in the food, agricultural, natural resources and human sciences; and advance leadership in resource stewardship and civics.
