"Dark Winter Nights: True Stories from Alaska" will showcase true tales from eight storytellers on Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Hering Auditorium.

This will be the fourth event in the "Dark Winter Nights" series, which was created by Robert Prince, associate professor of journalism at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The November 2014 show at Pioneer Park drew a standing-room-only crowd.

“The lesson we learned last year was that we needed a bigger venue,” Prince said. The move to Hering Auditorium, located in Lathrop High School, came sooner than expected.  “Hering was our long-term dream goal. To be moving there just a year after we started doing these events is absolutely amazing.”

The event was born from Prince's frustration with televised depictions of Alaska.

“Many reality TV programs have created a caricature of Alaska. I figured if people wanted to know what life in Alaska is really like, it should be Alaskans bringing them those true stories,” he said.

Prince created his own documentary radio program and podcast with the goal of sharing authentic stories from Alaska with the rest of the world. The live event is intended to recruit more storytellers and build awareness of the radio program and podcast.  The radio program airs the third Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. on KUAC FM 89.9. The podcast is available on iTunes or through the "Dark Winter Nights" website.

Regular admission to the April 25 event is $10, but students and military with ID pay $5. Children 12 and under are free. Information on tickets is available at www.darkwinternights.com.

"Dark Winter Nights" is presented by the UAF Journalism Department, part of the College of Liberal Arts. If you have a great story about living in Alaska, contact Prince at 907-474-6249 or rob.prince@alaska.edu or visit www.darkwinternights.com.
