"Dark Winter Nights: True Stories from Alaska," a live storytelling event, will hit the stage at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in Lathrop High School's Hering Auditorium.

Preselected storytellers will share their amazing, poignant and hilarious true stories about life in Alaska. KUAC will broadcast the program live on FM 89.9 and stream it on www.kuac.org.

Admission is $15. Admission for students and military personnel is $10 with ID. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are on sale now at www.darkwinternights.com.

The event, which is being held for the fifth time, was born from a frustration with depictions of Alaska on reality television shows, said creator Robert Prince, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

“Many reality TV programs have created a caricature of Alaska," he said. "I figured if people wanted to know what life in Alaska is really like, it should be Alaskans bringing them those true stories.”

Prince created his own documentary radio program and podcast to share authentic stories from Alaska with the rest of the world. The live event is intended to recruit more storytellers and build awareness of the radio program and podcast. The radio program airs the third Saturday of each month on KUAC-FM. The podcast is available on iTunes or through the Dark Winter Nights website.
