April 8, 2016
“Dark Winter Nights: True Stories from Alaska” will offer a live storytelling event at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Lathrop High School’s Hering Auditorium. Storytellers will include Zoey Grenier, who was crowned Miss Alaska in 2015, and Mike Hopper, who survived a devastating avalanche in 2014.
Tickets went on sale April 1 and can be purchased online or at the door. General admission is $15; students, seniors, and military are $10; and children 12 and younger are $5.
“Dark Winter Nights” is a live event, radio program and podcast started by University of Alaska Fairbanks Journalism Chair Rob Prince in 2014. Prince was unhappy with the depictions of Alaska found in many reality television shows and decided to create a new platform for Alaskans to share their own true stories with the world.
Prince and his crew produce a monthly radio program and podcast, along with several live events each year. The “Dark Winter Nights” radio program airs at 7 p.m. the third Saturday of each month on KUAC-FM 89.9. The podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play or darkwinternights.com.
“Dark Winter Nights” is always looking for storytellers. If you have a great true story about living in Alaska, contact Prince at 907-474-6249, rob.prince@alaska.edu, or submit online at www.darkwinternights.com.
