Diabetes educational training offered in Fairbanks
March 3, 2017
Participants in four-day training offered in Fairbanks during March will learn how
to teach others about managing their diabetes.
The Diabetes Self-Management Program Leaders Course on March 16-17 and March 23-24
will train individuals how to teach a six-week diabetes self-management workshop through
clinics, senior centers and other community sites. The training is aimed at medical
professionals and community volunteers who will offer the series to individuals with
diabetes, their families and their caregivers.
The training will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 249 of the Fairbanks Imaging
Center at 1650 Cowles St. It will cover managing symptoms, communicating with the
health care team, eating healthier, fighting fatigue and pain, monitoring blood sugar
levels and making daily tasks easier.
Leslie Shallcross, a registered dietician and agent for the University of Alaska Fairbanks
Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the training, which is based on curriculum
from Stanford University. She said the program has been shown to help individuals
manage their diabetes and decrease hospital and emergency rooms visits. The program
is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National
Council on Aging.
The training is co-sponsored the Alaska Nurses Association, the Alaska Department
of Health and Social Services, and Extension. Twenty-four continuing education units
in nursing are available with completion of the training. The cost is $150, and participants
may register at http://bit.ly/DsmPLC. For more information, contact Shallcross at 907-474-2426 or lashallcross@alaska.edu.
