Discover Alaska lecture series begins on May 30

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning will present its annual Discover Alaska lecture series starting May 30.
Guest lecturers will offer an in-depth look at various aspects of Alaska in the free 10-part series. Lectures are at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Murie Building auditorium at UAF.
Master gardener Terry Reichardt will launch the series on May 30 with “30-plus Years of Gardening in the Interior.”

June 6 — “Walter Harper, Alaska Native Son,” Mary Ehrlander, director of UAF Arctic
and Northern studies program
June 13 — “Dinosaurs and Darkness: The Latest of Alaska’s Dinosaur Research,” Patrick
Druckenmiller, Earth sciences curator, University of Alaska Museum of the North, and
associate professor at UAF Department of Geosciences
June 20 — “Tundra be Dammed: Beaver Colonization of the Arctic,” Ken Tape, ecologist,
UAF Institute of Northern Engineering
June 27 — “HAARP: New Frontiers in Space Science on the Last Frontier,” Bob McCoy,
director of UAF Geophysical Institute
July 11 — “Responding to Rapid Environmental Change in Alaska’s Arctic,” Hajo Eicken,
director of the UAF International Arctic Research Center
July 18 — “Ruth Burnett Fish Hatchery and Stocking Interior Waters,” Travis Hyer,
assistant hatchery manager, Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery
July 25 — “Alaska at a Crossroads: History Lessons and Communication Challenges in
a Tumultuous Era,” Dermot Cole, author and journalist
Aug. 1 — “Eielson Update on the F-35s,” Kevin Blanchard, director, 354th Fighter Wing
F-35, Program Integration Office, Eielson Air Force Base
Aug. 8 — “Scuba Diving in Alaska’s Waters,” Mitch Osborne and Katherine Sample, Test
the Waters
