Discover Alaska lecture series to begin on May 29

The Discover Alaska lecture series will begin on May 29, featuring a variety of topics
that spotlight life in the Last Frontier.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning will host
the free 10-part series. Lectures will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Murie Building
auditorium at UAF.
Lectures on the schedule include:
May 29 — “What is a Folk School?” Kerri Hamos, programs director, The Folk School
June 5 — “Climate Change Impacts on Insects in Alaska and Globally,” Derek Sikes, curator of insects, University of Alaska Museum of the North, and professor of entomology, UAF Department of Biology and Wildlife
June 12 — “Unmanned Aerial Systems: Their Capabilities, Potential, and Current Research Uses,” Peter Webley, associate director of research, UAF Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration
June 19 — “Reading Nature’s Story: Interpreting Tracks and Signs of Alaska’s Wildlife,” Mike Taras, wildlife education and outreach specialist, Alaska Department of Fish and Game
June 26 — “Responses, Risks and Resilience of Arctic Marine Mammals in a Changing Climate,” Donna Hauser, research assistant professor, UAF International Arctic Research Center
July 10 — “Chena Slough and River Changes Over the Past 100 Years,” Bob Henszey, branch chief, Conservation Planning Assistance, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
July 17 — “Landslides and Science Education in Denali National Park and Preserve,” Denny Capps, Denali geologist, and Sierra McLane, director, Murie Science and Learning Center, both with the National Park Service
July 24 — “Alaska’s Berries and Their Changing Seasons,” Katie Spellman, research assistant professor, UAF International Arctic Research Center
July 31 — “Earth’s Aurora vs. Jupiter’s Aurorae,” Peter Delamere, UAF professor of space physics
Aug. 7 — “From Cabbage to Cannabis: Twenty Years on a Sub-Arctic Farm,” Mike Emers, owner, Rosie Creek Farms
