Donations needed to support Nepal citizens
May 12, 2015
Members of the University of Alaska Fairbanks community who wish to donate to earthquake
relief efforts in Nepal can use the American Red Cross website.
A magnitude 7.8 quake struck Nepal on April 25, followed by large aftershocks and
then another massive 7.4 quake on May 12. Thousands of people have died. Aid is being
sent by other countries and non-governmental organizations, but many areas are difficult
to reach; aid workers report that greater efforts are needed.
"Although we have a relatively small number of individuals connected to Nepal, these
individuals span the UAF and Fairbanks communities," said Donna Anger, director of
the UAF Office of International Programs and Initiatives.Anger said UAF has currently
enrolled students from Nepal, students newly accepted for fall 2015 and UAF international
alumni residing in the lower 48. Additionally, a UAF graduate who received her PhD
this past Sunday served in Nepal for two years with the Peace Corps.
Anger said UAF faculty who work with the students contacted her office immediately
following the earthquake.
The UAF Geophysical Institute is providing data and images of Nepal through the Alaska
Satellite Facility.
