The University of Alaska Fairbanks will offer a new online course this spring geared
to help educators teach about earthquake science.
The one-credit professional development course will provide teachers with the knowledge,
tools and resources to teach earthquake topics to a wide range of students, from K-12
to community college levels. The course will guide teachers through hands-on demonstrations
that will help them explain various seismic principles. Each participant will receive
a free software package with tools to analyze real seismic data from Alaska and around
the world. Discussion with instructors and classmates will be an important part of
the class.
"We want not only to provide information but also to help educators develop an online
cohort of other people teaching similar topics from whom they can draw inspiration
and help," said course instructor Lea Gardine of the Alaska Earthquake Center.
The Alaska Earthquake Center, part of the UAF Geophysical Institute, is partnering
with the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology’s Seismographs in Schools
program to offer the online course for Alaska educators for spring semester.
The course begins Jan. 17; preliminary registration closes Jan. 10. Course fees are
$76 per person. The IRIS Seismographs in Schools Program will reimburse educators
upon successful course completion.
