High school students and their teacher leaders from across Alaska are attending the Educators Rising Alaska annual statewide leadership conference, which will be held this year on the Fairbanks campus, March 1-3.

Students aspiring to become future educators join Educators Rising Alaska for guidance on pathways to becoming a teacher. While at the conference, students will compete in standards-based events that demonstrate their knowledge and leadership in Education. The conference competitions also provide an opportunity for them to qualify to attend the National Educators Rising Conference, which will be held this year in Washington, DC,  June 17-21.

The kickoff banquet will be in the Wood Center ballroom where attendees will hear speakers including 2020 Alaska Teacher of the Year Amy Gallaway, UA President Jim Johnsen, Vice Chancellor Keith Champagne, and CNSM Dean Kinchel Doerner. The banquet will be followed by a performance the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers, led by School of Education Professor Sean Topkok. Provost Anupma Prakash and a representative from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development will also attend.

A welcome speech will be delivered to students on Monday morning by Steve Atwater, executive dean of the UA College of Education.

Last year's conference was hosted at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. This year's conference has 106 registered students attending from 14 different school districts and from 22 different communities.
