Eicken, a professor of geophysics with joint appointments to IARC, the Geophysical Institute and the Department of Geosciences, has been at the University of Alaska Fairbanks since 1998. He earned his doctorate from the University of Bremen, Germany, in 1990. As an internationally renowned sea ice specialist, he has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications, grant funding and awards.

“Professor Eicken has long acted as a valued advisor and respected representative of IARC,” noted IARC director Larry Hinzman. “Hajo’s broad understanding of the arctic system and his strong engagement in national and international relations made him an ideal person for this position.”

UAF Vice Chancellor of Research Mark Myers echoed Hinzman’s enthusiasm. “Hajo is a world expert on sea ice and a leader in the international efforts to develop an integrated arctic observing network. His ability to coordinate and lead interdisciplinary research, combined with his demonstrated commitment to students, collaborators, IARC and UAF, make him an outstanding choice for deputy director,” he said.

Supported by the U.S. and Japanese governments, IARC was established in 1999. Its mission is to foster arctic research in an international setting to help all nations, the scientific community and society understand, prepare for and adapt to climate change impacts on the Arctic.
