Ellen Lopez announced as new College of Liberal Arts dean
June 8, 2020
Ellen Lopez has been named the dean of the College of Liberal Arts. She will start in her new role on July 5.
Lopez currently serves as the chair of CLA’s Department of Psychology and Philosophy. She takes on this responsibility as Todd Sherman, who has served CLA for nearly eight years as dean, retires from his position.
“I am excited to have Dr. Lopez join UAFs senior leadership team," said Anupma Prakash, provost and executive vice chancellor. "Dr. Lopez is recognized and respected not only for the many academic and research contributions she has made, but also for her thoughtful and inclusive leadership. She brings fresh perspectives, and I look forward to working with her as we grow the diverse strengths of CLA while navigating the current fiscal climate.”
Lopez earned her Ph.D. in public health from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and her master's in public health from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UAF in 2009, Lopez was instrumental in establishing the University of Florida’s College of Public Health and Health Professions.
As a public health trained professional with expertise in community-based participatory research, Lopez’ research, teaching, service and leadership engage community stakeholders in addressing priority concerns towards enhancing well-being, quality of life, social justice and sustainability.
In her response to accepting the role, Lopez said, “I feel deeply privileged to be a member of CLA, UAF and the Fairbanks community. I could not ask for more dedicated colleagues, and I would be absolutely honored to serve as the CLA dean.“
