Emergency preparedness series begins Sept. 28

September is National Preparedness Month, and a series of free distance-delivered workshops Sept. 28-Oct. 1 will provide tips on preparedness.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service will host Zoom workshops on what to do before, during and after a natural disaster or other emergency. Instructors include Art Nash, Julie Cascio, Sarah Lewis, Leif Albertson and Gina Dionne from Extension and David Holen of Alaska Sea Grant's Marine Advisory Program. Topics include:


  • Preparing families for an emergency or disaster, noon-1 p.m. Sept. 28

  • Preparing for disasters: local resources and community responders, 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 28

  • Disasters and the home, 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 29

  • Responding to a disaster and resources for elders and vulnerable community members, 6-7 p.m. Sept. 30

  • Resources for readiness: Using the “Alaska Emergency and Disaster Homeowner's Handbook” and additional information, 6-7 p.m. Oct. 1
