Explore UAF event for rural, Alaska Native students

Current and college-bound students are invited to Explore UAF, a daylong event that showcases the resources and opportunities available to rural and Alaska Native students on March 2.

“It’s an opportunity for students to explore opportunities that they might not otherwise know about,” said Brianna Pauling, advisor and office manager at Rural Student Services. “Many students don’t realize what a great community we have and how much support is available to them. Students who attend will learn about opportunities and resources that will help make college more accessible.”

The schedule of events includes:


  • 10-11:30 a.m., Wood Center Room D: Discover UAF: The Admissions Office will guide students through what UAF has to offer and tour the campus.

  • 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wood Center ballroom and Rooms C and D: Festival of Native Arts workshops. Workshop topics include Athabascan songs, Yup’ik song and dance, Alaska Native languages, cedar weaving, Yup’ik chant and making akutaq (traditional ice cream).

  • 11 a.m.-4 p.m.,Davis Concert Hall Great Hall: Alaska Native and Rural Scholarship and Internship Fair, with information about opportunities that support current UAF and college-bound students.

  • 1-2 p.m., Davis Concert Hall Great Hall: Potluck lunch and door prizes.

  • 5-11 p.m., Davis Concert Hall: Festival of Native Arts performances and artisan vendors. Students are encouraged to take part in the workshops that will be offered throughout the day and follow the fair up with performances and vendors.
