December 8, 2015
Several faculty development events are on the schedule this week, including those
listed below. For a full list, view (and bookmark) the UAF Faculty Development Calendar:

Tuesday, Dec. 8
Open lab, 2-4 p.m., 131 Bunnell
Open labs are for current faculty members teaching or developing eLearning-supported
classes. Instructional designers will be on hand to help faculty develop curriculum,
create and schedule assessments, or simply troubleshoot problems.
Wednesday, Dec. 9
Open Lab, 10 a.m.-noon, 131 Bunnell
Special topics workshop: The “Getting Started” Folder, noon-1 p.m., 131 Bunnell or
streamed
In a face-to-face course, you have the first day of class to set the stage and get
your students on the right path. In an online asynchronous class, you have a “Getting
Started” folder to orient the student. This session will give faculty ideas about
what to include and acquaint them with templates and resources they can quickly customize
and adjust for their discipline. The workshop will also offer a demonstration and
assistance in creating such a folder. And the best part — one can likely be reused
for other classes.
Thursday, Dec. 10
Third Thursdays: Technology and Disabilities Services, noon-1 p.m., Bunnell 319B or
streamed
Mary Matthews, Disability Services director, will talk about the role technology plays
for students with disabilities and how her office can assist you and your students.
This session will be helpful for face-to-face, blended and online classes alike. Pizza
and drinks are provided.
RSVP by emailing Gary Bender.
Friday, Dec. 11
Open lab, 10 a.m.-noon, 131 Bunnell
Teaching Tips LIVE: The Online Lab Course, 1-2 p.m., streamed
It is often said lab-based learning experiences are difficult to replicate in the
online environment. This streamed session will explore online labs that are successful
and will discuss when online labs are better than their face-to-face equivalent.
