Faculty to discuss adventurous learning
April 2, 2014
Sue Renes, of the School of Education, will lead a conversation among faculty titled
"From Torture to Adventure: How Technology and Empathy Can Change the Face of Higher
Education" at 1 p.m., April 7, in 301 Murie Building.
This one-hour discussion is a Faculty on TAP (Teaching And Pedagogy) session, a UAF
eLearning initiative that brings together faculty who want to discuss any and all
aspects of the methods, challenges and rewards of teaching.
Renes will focus on learning in higher education that involves more adventure and
less emotional anguish. The emotional anguish for a student often results from comments
made by professors and other college officials that are less than supportive or even
hostile. To learn something requires hard work on the part of the student, but the
student should not have to tolerate an environment that makes the job of learning
even tougher. Learning can definitely involve more adventure and less pain, if instructors
are up for the challenge.
Food and beverages, in addition to lively conversation, will be provided.
If you'd like to arrange your own Faculty on TAP session, contact Madara Mason, faculty
development coordinator, at emason@alaska.edu.
