Grab online ideas during National Distance Learning Week
November 1, 2016
During National Distance Learning Week, Nov. 7-11, instructors are encouraged to connect
with UAF eLearning instructional designers about developing an online course or enhancing
an online component in a current course.
Open labs are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. Friday in 131 Bunnell. A virtual open lab will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. Open labs are open to everyone and allow instructors
to bring any questions or ideas and get instant feedback.
UAF instructional designers will also be presenting at the University of Alaska Anchorage’s
eTech Fair during National Distance Learning Week. The following sessions are scheduled:
Using VoiceThread in Your Course
Janene McMahan, UAF instructional designer
Tuesday, Nov. 8, 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Google Hangout
VoiceThread is an online tool that can help increase student participation and discussion
in your course. This session covers methods and manners for use in your course including
assessments. UAA and UAF have VoiceThread integrated into Blackboard so portions of
the session will be specific to Blackboard. The remainder will work for anyone who
wants to offer students an avenue to communicate with you and others in the course.
30 Ways to Use Google Suite for Education
Kendall Newman Sadiik and Heidi Olson, UAF instructional designers
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2-2:45 p.m.
Google Hangout
This rapid-fire session will inundate you with ideas for your course — both new tools
and ways of innovating on the familiar. In 30 minutes, we’ll offer 30 overviews of
cutting-edge applications of Google Suite for Education, and we'll even give you all
the links so you can go back and look at each example on your own. You’ll walk away
with more ideas than you could implement, and at least a few that you’re excited to
get started with!
Preparing Video for the Web
Sean Holland, UAF instructional designer
Wednesday, Nov. 9, 4-4:45 p.m.
Google Hangout
Learn how to make the right technical choices when you export and publish a screencast
or an instructional video. This session will cover video resolutions, common encoding
options such as H.264, advances in video compression such as WebM, and what tools
exist to help you achieve accessibility and quality in your own educational media
productions.
Blackboard Unknown: 5 Things You Didn’t Expect
Chris Beks, UAF instructional designer
Friday, Nov. 11, from 2-2:45 p.m.
Google Hangout
Blackboard's large selection of available tools makes it sometimes difficult to find
the ones that are most useful for you. Discover some “new” tools that will help you
save time and become more efficient in Blackboard.
